Our first plaque and it’s an exciting event! The newspapers were full of brilliant details – like the fact that the assistant paymaster was mostly annoyed about having to handwrite 700 cheques after the robbery. Maybe they shouldn’t have picked up the monthly payroll in cash in person from the bank then taken a streetcar back to the office?! It’s kind of amazing they weren’t robbed earlier! Sadly, the plaque itself is no longer there.
“CITY PAYROLL STOLEN
September 28, 1922
On this site, near the side door of the old City Hall, three men, armed and masked, robbed the Paymaster and his assistant of the entire monthly payroll of $75,000.”

P.S. I decided not to duplicate plaque info, so short daily posts like this are on https://www.instagram.com/randomlygen/ and the main big write-ups are on https://randomlygenerated.ca/blogs/vancouver-s-100-centennial-plaques.
I’d love to know whether and how the money was spent, dispersed or hidden… and also if Robert ever got a new coat, poor chap!
