This year’s project is #100VancouverPlaques. In 1986, Vancouver celebrated the city’s 100th birthday by installing 100 plaques around the city. My goal is to find all of them, write up a little bit about the topic commemorated, and draw something too. At the end of the project, I hope it’s like a little guidebook to the city’s history (or at least, a snapshot of what they thought was important in 1986!).
Before I get started, I want to acknowledge that this project is looking at sites located within the unceded and ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
There are many different historical plaques around Vancouver, but the 1986 centennial plaques have kind of been forgotten. They were installed by a specialist commission, rather than the city or a heritage group, so nobody is looking out for them.
I’ve always loved reading any plaque I can find. When I started looking into these yellow ovals I’d found around town, I realized there were meant to be one hundred of them and thought they’d make great 100DaysProject!

Everyone who lives in Vancouver, wishes they lived in Vancouver, or is just a little bit curious about Vancouver, should follow this project. I’m eagerly waiting to fill all the gaps in my knowledge of Vancouver history. Something tells me there are at least 100 gaps to fill!
